- How do I book?
Visit our booking page for rates and availability – just select the dates you want to stay and this will take you to our online booking portal. You can pay your deposit securely online with Stripe. Alternatively please call us on 01691 774033 or email email@example.com.
- Do you charge extra for children and can you accommodate larger families?
We base our pitch price of £23 (2022) on two adults sharing and charge £5 per night each for the first two children over 4 staying with you to cover additional costs incurred in the boring stuff such as water, loo roll, insurances etc. We recognise that families with more than two children are often the least able to afford additional costs – so if you are a family with more than two children we will only charge for the first two children over 4, the most you’ll pay for our tent camping pitches is £33 per night plus your Greener Camping Club membership of £12. We also don’t put our prices up in the holidays – we think that’s fairer for everyone.
Our Coppice Bell Tent is fixed at £90 (2022) per night and furnished for a family of four. However if you have up to two extra children we can accommodate at no extra charge but ask that you bring camping beds and bedding for them.
- Are dogs allowed?
Yes. We allow up to two well behaved dogs per booking on the hayfield pitches. Unfortunately we do not allow dogs in the bell tent or on Acorn pitch. Please note that not only do we keep our own livestock but we are surrounded by farmland which is home to cattle and sheep. Dogs must be on a lead at all times whilst on site. When walking on the public footpaths on surrounding land we ask that you follow the Country Code, keep to paths and keep your dog on the lead. Please ensure that you clean up after your dogs, we can provide eco-bags for this purpose. If you have more than two dogs please get in touch and we will consider on an individual basis.
- How accessible is the site?
Our land is very up and down with some steep footpaths and regrettably there is no level access to any pitches. The footpaths are natural soil with some woodchip in places and can be uneven. There are steps to the main toilet and shower unit or alternatively a longer walk around the site perimeter which is step free and gentler gradients. If you have any accessibility requirements we ask that you call us to discuss further before committing to a booking.
- How eco are you?
We are certified with The Greener Camping Club. As part of the requirements of the club we are strongly committed to recycling all rubbish, using renewable energy and being as low impact as possible on our land. We encourage the ‘leave only footprints’ ethos. For every member we join to the Greener Camping Club the club will plant a tree and we also have access to various bursaries and environmental incentives. Whilst we accept that visiting us by car is likely to be a preferred method of transport we invite all our customers to use public transport when visiting local attractions and there are good rail and bus links nearby. Chester also has a Park & Ride facility.
- Can I charge my electric car on site?
Unfortunately we are not able to charge electric cars. The nearest fast charger (100kw) is at the public car park in Chirk by the doctors surgery. There are also chargers at McDonalds near the site and Farm & Pet Place a little further down the A5 towards Oswestry.
- Do I have to be a member of The Greener Camping Club to stay with you?
Yes. It is a condition of our certification that all customers have to be members. If you are not already a member we will enroll you when we take your booking reservation at £12 per pitch. This membership is non-refundable. Once joined you will be able to book at any Greener Camping Club site during your membership term without incurring further membership fees. Membership runs from January to December. If joining after 1st September the membership will run to the end of the following year.
- What are your arrival and departure times?
We ask that you arrive between 2pm and 8pm and that your pitch is packed up by 10.30am on your departure day. If you are going to be arriving late or would like us to accommodate you at an earlier time please let us know on 01691 774033 so that we can arrange for your pitch to be ready and be here to meet you or store your equipment on site until the pitch is available. For arrivals after 8pm we ask you to contact us first as a matter of courtesy. If you expect to be significantly delayed we may ask you to defer arriving until the morning. Our site gates are closed from 10pm to 7am.
- Where are the nearest shops?
The nearest shops are in Chirk, approximately 3 miles from the site. There are a number of small food stores, butchers, greengrocers, chemist and also some public houses and restaurants. Larger superstores can be found at Ruabon, Wrexham and Oswestry. We have a small honesty shop on site selling essentials.
- Where is the nearest railway station?
The nearest station is Chirk, approximately 3.5 miles away. Chirk provides services to and from Chester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Holyhead. Chester is on the West Coast mainline and links across the country including London Euston (2 hours direct).
- Do you have electric hook up?
No. We are an off-grid camping site. We can provide some assistance with charging mobile phones and there is a standard plug socket in the shower unit for this purpose. We recommend that you bring a portable power bank for devices together with torches and spare batteries.
- Are camper vans and caravans allowed?
No. The land is not suitable for caravans or motorhomes and we only permit tents and trailer tents. Small campervans can be accommodated on Wren and Squirrel pitches. A Caravan & Motorhome Club certificated site is located next door at Halton Farm. .
- Do you have a playground?
No we do not have a playgound. However, we have lots of space for children to play and explore and we encourage an active imagination! You are welcome to bring outdoor toys and games to play on the field. Children are welcome to build dens in the wood but should be supervised.
- I’m not sure about composting loos?
Don’t worry! Our composting toilets are clean and safe to use with simple instructions. Each unit is located in a bright 4′ square shed with plenty of room and equipped with a handwashing sink, solar light and mirror. A compost toilet is simply a dry toilet that separates liquid and solid waste and converts it into harmless compost that feeds our trees. There are full instructions in each toilet unit.
- Do you have an Elsan disposal point?
We ask guests to use the composting toilets or plumbed toilet whilst on site. If you bring and use a portable toilet with chemicals such as Elsan Blue or similar you will be unable to dispose on site as they cannot be disposed on in a septic tank system and you will need to arrange for this to be disposed of at a suitable facility.
- Do you have vehicle access to the pitches?
We do not have unlimited vehicle access to the pitches. We ask that you park your car at the car park at the top of the site and we will then either direct you to vehicle access to the pitch if the ground conditions are suitable or we can transport your tent and equipment to your pitches with our 4×4 or tractor. Once you have set up we ask you to return your vehicle to the car park unless you have specific accessibility needs and require your vehicle on pitch.
The car park is securely locked overnight with a combination code lock that is changed weekly, guests are provided with the code on arrival.
- How quiet is the campsite?
The site is very secluded and peaceful with abundant wildlife and surrounded by meadow and woodland. However due to the location of the A5/A483 road which is approximately half a mile to the west of the site we do get some background traffic noise from the road and from vehicles travelling over the Dee Viaduct. The level of noise is affected by the volume of traffic, time of year and weather conditions but is rarely intrusive.
- Do you have WiFi?
As an off-grid campsite we do not offer WiFi to our guests. We hope you’ll relax during your stay and have a device detox but we fully appreciate that modern life these days isn’t so easy to manage without screens and phones! You can get a reasonable mobile phone signal from the car park, signal from the pitches is variable depending on network provider and weather conditions.
